The Challenge

Maintenance and production team members needed regular access to a spindle inside a robot cell, about 6.5 feet off the floor. The only option was a typical fiberglass ladder: heavy, awkward to carry into the cell, unstable to work from, and slow to set up. A fixed platform was not an option either, because it would sit in the robot’s path during production. The plant needed easy, stable access that could get completely out of the robot’s way the moment work was done.

Key Requirements

  • Easy spindle access without a fiberglass ladder
  • Stable, guarded standing platform at 79 in
  • Slide out for service, lock back into home position
  • Sensor confirms the platform is home before the robot runs
  • Lightweight ladder that hangs on the wall and hooks onto the platform

The ICR Solution

ICR designed and fabricated a retractable maintenance platform that slides out on demand. A spring-loaded pull handle releases a locking pin, the platform slides on its rails against physical stops, and the pin drops back into its slot to lock it out or home. A self-closing safety gate guards the open edge. When the work is done, the platform slides back to its home position, where a safety sensor confirms it is clear of the robot so production can continue. A 17 lb aluminum ladder hangs on the wall outside the cell and hooks onto the platform, with alignment pins into the cell floor, replacing the heavy fiberglass ladder.

Equipment & Technology

  • Retractable steel platform with treadplate deck
  • Spring-loaded pull handle and locking pin
  • Physical end stops
  • Self-closing safety gate
  • IFM inductive proximity sensors (stored position)
  • 6061-T6 aluminum clip-in ladder, 17 lb

Scope of Work

  • Up-Front Engineering
  • Mechanical Design
  • Fabrication
  • Sensor Integration
  • Installation

Results

Maintenance and production team members now reach the spindle in moments, standing on a stable, guarded platform instead of a fiberglass ladder. When they finish, the platform locks home and the sensor confirms it is out of the robot’s way, so the cell goes straight back to production. Service is faster, safer and simpler, and the robot never runs with the platform in its path.
